The holidays can be such a stressful time for all of us, especially if we are struggling with depression. Not only do the holidays usually involve family, they also involve spending money and it is all done in a pretty short time period. So no wonder we are feeling especially down!! Here are 4 helpful tips to fight our depression during the holiday season:
1. Prepare and plan ahead: make some extra therapy appts, set a budget, maybe we buy a lightbox, join a group, etc
2. Volunteer! It can not only help other people survive their holidays, but force us to get out of the house and get some perspective on our own situation.
3. Take a break and give yourself some space. Although we don’t want to isolate all the time (because that can make our depression worse) but sometimes we just need a break from a party or a difficult family member. Know that you can always step away and go to the bathroom or step outside for some fresh air. Anything to help you breathe and feel okay enough to re-engage.
4. Setting reasonable and achievable goals: Not measuring our life to others or what is portrayed in the media can help us stay focused on what we do have and where we are at now. Being thankful for those things can help us feel better about our situation and keep us focused on what’s important. Making these goals achievable also helps us feel better about our situation and celebrate each step we have made to better our life 🙂
